The boy at the bottom Wants to be on top Wants to reorder The hierarchy
He takes his guns An odyssey Amongst the pyramids Of high school kings and queens
Of children Eating their cheese sandwiches Lovingly prepared By their mothers
I will show them He says Show them The power of the gun
His finger has a blister About to break About to form a ripple A ricochet to our collective heart
In their faded jerseys Cowboys and Indians Was always about power Never justice
Will the angle be right this time For the senator in his cowboy hat To see past the money Which lines his coat pockets
What is the cost of our freedom In the lives of our children Their ghosts rise up Their ghosts speak out
As they take the gun From the boy’s hand And whisper in his ear “You are worth
More."

Week 17 – The Dilemma of Purpose
Such an important and powerful poem, Anna. The video brought tears to my eyes. I can’t understand why we can’t stop this. It’s absolutely too much.
This was certainly a hard week for me. Hard even to post this because, as I tried to relate, I just don’t know what else to say. I feel helpless. And I know we all experience this frustration over how to make change when we are not in positions to make said change. It’s not fair that we keep feeling some twisted security in it not being “our” child… but it is our children and our community and mothers and fathers are going through unending grief. My heart is just broken.

Thank you, Angelica. I struggled with insecurity over it not being a short story, with it being so limited, with not saying more. But, as I think you’ll find if you continue to stick with us week after week, some weeks are a fight. Some weeks, the negative voice monster inside is very loud and aggressive.
